I was lucky enough to take a weekend trip to Brussels, Belgium and even though I went in thinking “oh it’s a pretty small city, I don’t think it’ll be THAT great”, I was definitely proven wrong. Brussels is a very small city and you can do it all in one full day, but that one full day was filled with so much fun, beautiful sights, and amazing food. This city definitely has its charm.

The best way to start your day in Brussels is to go to the main square, the Grand Place. There you can find the town hall and all of the surrounding buildings have such beautiful golden architecture. In this picture, you can see part of the square, and the town hall is the building with the tower. It’s probably the most touristy place in Brussels but was very happening and fun to be in. I love squares, they are always my favorite places in European cities. Since the weather was so amazing, all of the restaurants in the square had their outdoor seating available and it was such a great experience to eat in the Grand Place. I will be honest, food in Brussels is definitely pricey (and not just in the Grand Place) but at least for one meal, it was definitely worth it. A classic Brussels dish is Mussels with fries and they were sooooo good. I attached a picture below. If you like seafood, you’ll be in awe of it and even if you don’t, I suggest you try it. Also, my diet during this weekend consisted of a lot of fries, waffles, and chocolates. All three are a MUST MUST eat if you ever visit Brussels. There is a reason that Brussels is famous for all three. For waffles and chocolate, I literally followed the smell in the Grand Place and found dozens of places to try and not one disappointed for either. Additionally, for fries, I went to Belgian Frites which is on a street right off the Grand Place and I tried a bunch of their sauces. Be willing to try some of the obscure-sounding sauces— they actually taste really good! And mayo with fries is amazing too!!

From the Grand Place, make your way to to the Royal Gallery of Saint Hebert. As you walk there, you will pass by plenty of great souvenir shops, chocolate shops, waffle places, fries stalls and more. Even if you don’t plan on buying anything luxury from this shopping gallery, it is so beautiful and worth stopping by.

Another sight to check out is the Saint Michael and Saint Gudula Cathedral, which I posted to the right. It’s about a 15-minute walk from the Grand Place and the walk is also very scenic. You can go into it, free of charge and it is a very peaceful place to be in. It was nice because it wasn’t very crowded either. Another sight to check out is the Royal Palace and while it is a bit farther from the city center, it was worth the walk. Finally, check out one of the funniest sights I’ve seen in Europe— the Manneken Pis. All it is is a statue of a little boy peeing but it is a treasure of Brussels that is on their must-see list. I attached a picture of it below.
Overall, Brussels is definitely a city that can be done in one day and is so worth the day trip. I had such good food and such a good time. I feel like a trip isn’t worth it until I’ve had some good eating, and I definitely did in Brussels.
